New Exhibit: Gold in the Gulf: A History of Florida’s Shrimp

March 3 – May 20

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 3, 2016, 5:30 – 7 pm

The Florida Maritime Museum (FMM) presents an exciting new exhibit, “Gold in the Gulf: A History of Florida’s Shrimp.” This exhibit explores the history of shrimping in Florida and how it has developed, in less than 100 years, into an over 40 million dollar a year industry that supplies 87% of American caught shrimp. Learn about the diverse people and families involved in this business, from Italian immigrants to Vietnamese refugees.

FMM is thrilled to announce two fundraising boat tours sponsored by Paradise Boat Tours!
On the tour, the knowledgeable and enthusiastic Captain Sherman will explore our pristine inter-coastal waterways aboard a spacious catamaran. During the 90-minutes aboard, ninety-five percent of tours see dolphins, and other wildlife including manatees, rays, fish, and birds. Participants will also explore Florida’s coastal heritage, and enjoy stories of authentic Cortez.

Paradise Boat Tours is generously donating all of the proceeds of this trip to support the efforts of FMM to preserve and share Florida’s rich maritime heritage!

Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors 65 and over, or $20 for kids under 12. Payment by cash, check or credit card is due at time of reservation. Please call (941) 708-6120 or visit the museum to reserve your seats.

The tour will leave from the Bridge Street Pier on Anna Maria Island.

Six week Class
A Maritime History: Florida Past and Present

Thursdays from 4:30 – 6 PM
Beginning March 17, 2015

FMM is working with Lifelong Learning Academy to present A Maritime History: Florida Past and Present. Water has shaped daily life throughout Florida’s history. This course traces that influence through more than 500 years, highlighting important events and figures and looking at how these weave together to created the state’s rich history.

Presented chronologically, classes will cover the Calusa (Native Americans of Florida’s southwest coast whose culture was based on fishing), Florida from the 1500s to the present, the evolution and application of celestial navigation, boatbuilding and shipwrecks, and marine archaeology. We will conclude by looking at the past, present, and future of commercial fishing in Florida.

Lecture: Overview of Florida’s Commercial Fishing

Wednesday,
March 16, 3 PM

This lecture focuses on the history of the commercial fishing in Florida from the perspective of the industry today. FMM’s Education Coordinator John Beale will discuss the fish and shellfish landed in the state, regional fisheries, and the types of boats used in Florida waters.Admission is FREE and seating is first come first served, beginning at 2:30. FMM members and volunteers can reserve seats by calling (941) 708-6120.

Imaging in Cortez
Wednesday, March 23, 8 AM
Cost: $5

Enjoy a walking photo tour of the picturesque Cortez Village and working waterfront. Nature photographer Richard Estabrook will guide you as you capture historic images off the beaten track. Bring camera equipment and wear sturdy walking shoes. Non-photographers are welcome, too. Class size is very limited so reservations are required. Call (941) 708-6120 to register.

Participants will meet on the porch of the Florida Maritime Museum.

Music on the Porch
Saturday, March 12
2 – 4 PM

This fun and FREE jam session is held on the second Saturday of each month. Come enjoy the music, or bring an instrument and make some of your own! Please keep in mind that musician participation may vary.
